Solutions: Myers Briggs Type Indicator

What's Your Type?

Excerpts below taken from  Introduction to Type  published by CPP Inc.

The Myers Briggs Testing Instrument (“MBTI”) is based on Carl Jung’s theories on psychological type. Jung observed that people’s differences in personality stemmed from innate tendencies to use their mind in different ways. The MBTI identifies each individual's preference based up on Jung’s eight mental functions. Jung believed that while everyone used all eight of the mental functions they had a natural preference for one over the other. This causes people to exert more energy towards their more preferred function thus developing behaviors and personality patterns characteristic of that function. The difference between which function is preferred, used, and developed causes the differences between people.

Myers Briggs Testing Instrument"Overall MBTI provides an ordered and logical way for understanding our differences in manifold work and daily activities."

There are 16 different types. But each of the types is a multifaceted aspect of personality and enhances understanding of oneself and others.

The MBTI is made up of a series of questions designed to distinguish each individual’s preferences. There is no right or wrong to these preferences. Each identifies normal and valuable human behavior. The combination of these preferences as defined by Jung and Isabel Myers is a psychological type: an underlying personality pattern resulting from the dynamic interaction of our four preferences, environmental influences, and our own choices.

MBTI can be used in an employee development and leadership development program. It is the most widely used personality index in the world. It is used to increase organizational effectiveness on many levels. Overall MBTI provides an ordered and logical way for understanding our differences in manifold work and daily activities: personal communication, relationship understanding and development, project management, teamwork, and preferred work styles. Some other highlights of the benefits of using the MBTI are listed below:

  • MBTI results focus on how people take in information and how they prioritize information to make decisions which impact most work and relational decisions.
  • MBTI type increases each person’s comfort with their work and communication and highlight potential “blind spots” and improvement areas.
  • MBTI identifies a person’s dominant function as a means to understanding motivation and typical reactions to stress.
  • MBTI theory is a lifelong learning tool used to highlight areas of development and can be used in coaching managers and leaders as they strive for excellence.
  • The MBTI provides a picture and data valuable for analyzing an organization’s systems, structure, and culture.
  • The MBTI and supporting data show the value added by diversity in the workplace.
